Plenty River Trail - Viewbank

These pix were taken on October 5, 2012, on a 4 km return hike along a sector of the Plenty River Trail, Viewpoint, 15 km NE from central Melbourne.

This is a shared Trail, and my journey started at the Banyule Rd access gate, then down to the Yarra River meeting the Main Yarra Trail.

Viewbank was named after a farming property (since demolished) built at the junction of the Yarra and Plenty Rivers during the 1840s, and was thus named in response to its outlook. Remnants of Viewbank's farming past can be seen from the historic silos still standing on Banyule Road. The area was primarily developed around the 1960s.

The Trail is adjacent to the silos, the North Eastern Horse and Pony Club, the Rosanna Golf Club, the Riding for the Disabled Centre, and the site of some of Melbourne's medium-frequency (AM) radio transmitting masts.

The Trail offers spectacular panoramas across the Yarra and Plenty River Valleys, towards the Dandenong and Yarra Ranges.

The skyscrapers of Melbourne are clearly visible on the western horizon.

There is a change in altitude of some 60 metres.
